PIER TO PIER

A public art and sound installation played from a fixed audio bench positioned along the edge of the South Coast.

‘Vivid, timely, poignant.’ Audience Feedback

Coastal audiences were invited to visit the bench at different locations across the 14 miles between Brighton and Worthing Piers as part of the Brighton Festival. They listened to a soundscape which included fragments from 14 people who live and work along the coast, accompanied by a coastal choir.

14 interviews & Coastal Choir

14 coastal sites for public art and sound installation

Through moving autobiographical stories, Pier to Pier takes a tour between two coastal locations accompanied by compositions from over 50 choir members living along the coast.

Interviews are conducted on the seafront and give a snapshot of coastal living across financial, environmental and political lines – taking in personal loss, migration and ideas around identity and community.

What is it like to live on the edge? What keeps us balanced?

The edge of an island, the edge of understanding, the edge of society, the edge of a decision, the edge of our voices, the edge of life.

Here is an interview with Radio Reverb / BBC Radio Sussex about the project….

The best piece I have seen in the Brighton Festival. My soul felt uplifted.
